The morning Back-Road Safari

A 4WD safari vehicle leaves Tusayan at 9:30 a.m., uses forest back roads around the south gate, and then your guide walks you along the rim for about an hour and a half. Pick it if you like to walk and want the village sights explained.

Back-Road Safari and Entrance Gate Bypass

About this experience

This is the morning sister of the Sunset Safari, by the same operator. Check in is at 9:15 a.m. and the vehicle leaves at 9:30 from the lot in front of the Tusayan Fire Department. Forest permits let it take back roads through the Kaibab National Forest and avoid the line at the South Entrance.

The difference is the walk. Once at the rim, the guide leads a walking tour of about 1.5 hours past Yavapai Point, Lookout Studio and the Bright Angel trailhead, with Hopi House on the itinerary. Guests mention flora, fauna and how people live with little water up here. It's three hours in all.

Bring good shoes and water. The listing warns off travellers with back or heart problems and pregnant travellers. Non-U.S. residents aged 16 and older pay the park's $100 nonresident fee on top of the $130 price.

  • Back roads that skip the south gate queue
  • About 1.5 hours walking the rim with a guide
  • Yavapai Point, Bright Angel trailhead, Hopi House
  • Group of 12 at most
  • Morning start, back by early afternoon

What guests say

★★★★★

Sheila was so knowledgable and was flexible with our itinerary to accommodate what the group preferred. Lots of info not only about the geography but about the flora and fauna and what it's like to live in an area with little water.

Our driver Ri was really friendly and knowledgeable. He was super patient with all the kids on tour (especially our super inquisitive boys). Taking the backroads and avoiding traffic was nice too.

We learned so much about the canyon and surrounding forest from him [...] which made it even more fun to explore the area after the tour.

Tips before you book

  • Take it on your first morning. Guests say it helps them explore on their own afterwards.
  • Arrive by 9:15 a.m. sharp; the vehicle leaves at 9:30.
  • Bring a refillable bottle. Stage 4 water restrictions have applied on the South Rim since 31 August 2026 (NPS).
